In this edition, Doctor Anitha answers questions from our readers about Gums.
Question 8:
Is it true that improper maintenance of gums might lead to cancer, heart problems and ulcer? - Gopi
Gum infection:
In some studies researchers have found that gum infection is linked to heart problems. Gum infection can spread to the heart through blood stream.
But a definite correlation between gum disease & heart problem has not yet been proved.
Ulceration can occur if the gums are injured or inflamed. Cancer can occur only if the injury to the gum is long term.
Question 9:
What is the link between brushing and gum maintenance? - Gopi
If the teeth are not brushed properly, layers of food debris called plaque can form over the teeth. If left for a period of time, they will be converted into hard substance called tartar.
These tartar & plaque can irritate the gums (gingiva) causing red, swollen gums which can bleed easily. If left untreated, it can even cause bone loss leading to loosening of teeth & subsequently requiring removal of teeth.
Question 10:

- Gargle after eating any food.
