The perfect robbery! - CBI Raid - Unsolved mystery

How it happened!

17th March 1987

On 17th March 1987, a person named Mon Singh booked room number 415 in The Taj Hotel, Mumbai.

He shared a Kerala address and told the hotel staff that he hailed from Trivandrum.

The same day's edition of Times of India had the following ad:

The classified advertisement was for intelligence officers and security officers. It asked the interested applicants to walk in for an interview at Taj Intercontinental Hotel in Mumbai the next day.

Many people showed interest in the classified and appeared for the interview. The interview was conducted at an office located in Mittal Towers in Nariman Point by Mon Singh.

He selected 26 candidates and all the selected candidates were asked to report to The Taj Hotel the following day at 11am.

As instructed, the selected candidates reported to the Taj around 11am.

Mon Singh gave them CBI identity cards.

He then hired a luxury coach bus via The Taj and asked all his new officers to board the bus. While in the bus, Mon Singh explained to them about the 'mock' raid that they are going to conduct in Opera House where Mumbai's most exclusive jewelry stores are located.

Mon Singh and his team reached TBZ (Tribhovandas Bhimji Zaveri) jewelers, a popular jewelry shop in Opera house around 2.15PM.

Mon Singh led the team into the shop and introduced himself to the owner Pratap Zevari as Research & Analysis Wing (R&AW) officer and produced a search warrant.

He also told the jeweler that the CBI is investigating the quality of gold sold in such jewelry shops.

He ordered the owner to shut down the CCTV cameras and surrender the licensed revolver owned by jeweler.

The owner, staff and customers were asked to stay aside and no one was allowed to make any phone calls.

Singh asked one of his team members to put up a board at the entrance of the shop stating that a raid is on.

Then, Mon Singh went around the shop, picking up showcase jewelry as 'samples'. All those picked samples were placed in polybags and stapled with slips showing a government seal. The jeweler also accompanied the raiding officer and his crew, as they continued to collect the 'samples'.

The raiding team also collected cash from the cash counter and stashed it in a suitcase.

After 45 minutes, Singh asked two of his men to put the briefcases in the bus. He asked his team members to keep watch on the shop and left in the bus to 'supervise' another raid.

The 26 new recruits and the owner waited for about an hour, before realizing that something has gone wrong!

Atlast they called the D B Marg police station.
