Why do we ring the bell in a temple?

Temple bell

God never sleeps, so we need not wake him up...

God knows everything, so we need not tell him that we have come to his temple...

God doesn’t expect us to seek any permission to enter his precinct as he welcomes us at all times...

Then why do we ring the bell???

As per Hindu tradition, it is believed that the ringing of the bell produces what is regarded as an auspicious sound. It produces the sound ‘Om’, the universal name of God. To gain the vision of the God, we all should have the auspiciousness within us...

Even while doing the ritualistic aarati, it is a custom to ring the bell. An added significance of ringing the bell is that they help to mask any inauspicious / irrelevant noises that might distract the worshippers from their devotional concentration and inner peace.
