REVIEWS - Heiress Apparently - Diana Ma
Genre - Teen & Young Adult Fiction
Heiress Apparently is a young adult fiction by Diana Ma. This is her first novel.
Summary:
Gemma Huang lives in Unites States with her parents. She is forbidden to visit her home country China by her parents for unknown reasons. But as we could expect that's what exactly she ends up doing!
Gemma abandons her plans for college to pursue a career in acting, much to the dismay of her parents. Her big acting break comes when she’s asked to play a lead role in a film that's shot in Beijing. And the film is also co-directed by her idol, veteran actress Eilene Deng. Since becoming an actress is her dream, Gemma decides to accept the offer and travel to Beijing.
When she arrives, she is stopped by paparazzi at the airport. She quickly realizes she may be the twin of Alysaa Chua, one of the most notorious young socialites in Beijing.
But it turns out that Alyssa is Gemma's cousin she never knew she had.
According to Alyssa, Gemma’s mother was banished from their affluent family years ago after stealing a priceless Tang dynasty painting. This revelation stuns Gemma. She tries unraveling the truth. In the process, she also encounters her good-looking boyfriend, Eric.
Review:
Heiress Apparently is an interesting read.
Following Gemma as she struggles with her family drama in addition to the skeptic film director is compelling.
The story plot and the secrets that get revealed are also cool.
On the flip side, the novel is very slow paced. Plus, there seems to be so much unnecessary information heaped up here and there.
The story line is very predictable.
Overall, a good read for readers who love family genre with foreign (Chinese) history and culture.
