In the last episode, we learnt about black holes. In this episode we are going to learn about exoplanets.

What are Exoplanets?

Exoplanets are planets which orbit a star other than our sun.

Why they are a mystery?

Scientists wanted to find out if planets other than our earth can support living things and whether aliens really exist. They also wanted to find how many planets are there in our galaxy. Recently a study revealed that aliens exist but they are too far to contact .After researching for many years they found that the planets in our solar system have no possibility of having life on them except Mars .So they studied Mars to know whether we can live on the red planet and found that oxygen levels will start depleting within two months if we went there. So, as they had found that no other planet can support life permanently in our solar system, they started to study the planets out of our solar system in a hope to find a planet like Earth and found many planets that may support life. But these planets were not like Earth, instead they were like Mars.

How do we find them?

We cannot find them using telescopes and space telescopes whenever we want to. When a star’s light rays are blocked by an exoplanet in orbit, we cannot see the star and we can only see a shadow. If we look very closely using a telescope, we will be able to spot the exoplanet.
