What is Medical Transcription (MT)?
Medical transcription is the process of converting voice-recorded medical reports as dictated by physicians or other healthcare professionals into text format. It can be done either in-house, which means in a doctor's office or hospital setting, or at home.
MT as profession
The person who does medical transcription is called a medical transcriptionist (MT) or medical language specialist (MLS).
Nowadays most of the reports are done by voice recognition or speech recognition (VR/SR) and not straight transcription (ST) as in the past, so the MT has to do mostly editing work.
Most people think that a medical degree is required for taking up this profession. But it's not mandatory to have any such degree for becoming a Medical Transcriptionist. All that's required is a medical transcription certificate and nowadays there are options to take medical transcription course online in which you can learn everything you need to know about medical transcription and earn your certificate at your own pace. Also some online training programs will help with graduate placement also.
So can anyone become a MT?
At present there is a huge demand for qualified medical transcriptionists. So individuals who have the required skills can succeed in this profession.
But a word of caution, Medical transcription can be a very challenging profession! It is a good profession to do at home but requires a lot of concentration and attention to details. The profession also requires good grammar skills, punctuation and knowledge of medical terminology.
How does it work?
A MT company will usually have many doctors as clients. The MT Company will either provide you with the software that you need to use for your work. Sometimes you may have to login to a website to download work or else you will directly receive it from your employer. Once you are done with your dictation, you need to send it back for review through email. Your employer will review your work and send it to the doctor.
