Dhrishyam

Why you should watch it?

Drishyam meaning "The sight" is not just any other movie! It talks about the desperate and intelligent measures taken by a father to save his daughter and wife from the clutches of law, after they commit an unexpected crime.

So how far will he go and can he save them?

This is a must watch movie for director Jeethu Joseph's direction and Mohanlal's subtle acting.

Note: The start might be a bit slow, but have patience and you will not be disappointed!

The story:

George Kutty is an orphan who progressed in life through his hard work. Now he has a sweet family consisting of his wife, Rani and two daughters. He runs the Cable TV service in the little town that he resides and is much adored by the fellow neighbors.

His family and Movies are everything for George.

George's beautiful and peaceful life takes a twist when his elder daughter, Anju accidentally kills a boy named Varun. Varun had earlier photographed Anju changing her dress in a nature camp using his mobile phone. He visits Anju's house and blackmails her using the video. Anju and her mom pleads to him but in vain. While trying to break Varun's mobile phone using a log, Anju accidently hits his head. The hit proves fatal and Varun dies at the spot.

Though shocked, Rani decides to hide the body. With the help of Anju, she buries Varun's body in their own garden. Her younger daughter Anu also witnesses the same.

The trio reports the unfavorable event to George Kutty. Though upset he decides to save his family from the clutches of law. He assures his daughter and wife that he will not let them go to jail by all means!

George tries to recreate the past day to create strong alibi for his family.

First he clears the murder scene but preserves Varun's sim card. He puts the sim card in a new mobile and throws it away in a lorry. He also disposes Varun's car in a lake. But a corrupt police constable notices him while driving the car. The constable also has a personal grudge against George Kutty.

Then George Kutty takes his family for a prayer meeting in another town. The family stays in that town and spends some more time there watching a movie and eating in a restaurant.

Meanwhile Varun turns out to be the son of Police IG, Geetha. After few days, Geetha realizes that her son has gone missing and orders for an investigation.

Though the constable alleges of seeing George in Varun's car, initial investigations with Anju, George and Rani doesn't give any lead to the police.

But Geetha hears about what the constable saw and asks the policemen to bring George Kutty's family for interrogation.

George has already predicted it and has already prepared his family members well for this situation. So Rani, Anu and Anju all provide prompt replies. The family also shares the tickets and receipts to support their alibi of traveling to a different town on the day Varun went missing.

Even the father who conducted the prayer meeting, the restaurant manager, the bus conductor and the boarding hotel manager confirms that they saw the family on the same day.

But Geetha is not convinced. Her police intuition tells her that there's something fishy. She again interrogates the witnesses and chalks out George Kutty's actions.

She now knows that George has RECREATED that one day and has unknowingly influenced the memory of all the witnesses to ascertain that they all saw them on that specific day, but actually it's the next day!

So to break the family's alibi and bring out the truth, she arrests George Kutty's family. In the police station the constable tries brute force to bring out the truth. While the elders and Anju continue to say that they are innocent, the young girl Anu gives up. She shows the place where the body was buried. But when the police digs up the place, they find remains of a calf!!!

Policemen are again stumped.

Even Rani, Anju and Anu are confused! It's obvious that George has moved the dead body without their knowledge.

Anu reports about police brutality to the media. This leads to the suspension of the constable. Eventually Geetha also resigns from her job.

Rani asks George about Varun's dead body but he denies to share the information with her, as he doesn't want any of his family members to end up in trouble.

In the final scene, George Kutty is seen signing in the remand register of the town's new police station. A quick flashback shows him leaving the same station with a shovel in his hand when it was under construction.

So it's revealed that George Kutty has hidden Varun's body in the foundation of the police station!!!

Remakes:

The movie seems to be a great attraction for remake too!

It's already remade in Telugu as Drushyam starring Venkatesh and Meena and in Kannada as Drishya starring Ravichandran and Navya Nair.

Tamil remake is named Papanasam and has Kamal and Gowthami as the lead characters.

Controversy:

ADGP Senkumar had shared concerns about the movie. Atleast two recent crimes were alleged to be influenced by this movie.

While the ADGP has a good cause, as a parent, I think what we should be more concerned about is the root cause! The way kids are brought up and the adverse effects of Mobile phone camera! As Varun's father himself points out in the movie, Varun is brought up as a spoiled brat! He disturbs innocent people and finally pays the price for that.

It is important to bring up kids with core morals and responsibilities.

Though I don't know Malayalam, I was able to watch and appreciate this movie even without subtitles. 100% recommended for all movie lovers.
