Bangalore the busy and buzzing IT heaven had a different dawn on 11th August 2010. In one of the busy and posh suburbs of the city, Priyanka, a Maths teacher at Delhi Public school, Bangalore was killed allegedly for money and ornaments.
Her husband Sathish Kumar Gupta found her body around 7:30 am after returning from his routine jogging. Sathish was working as HR with IT giant Infosys and hence his wife's brutal murder hit headlines immediately.
The couple was married three years ago and did not have children.
As per police, Gupta told them that he received a call from his wife on his cellphone at 5.43 am on the same day, three minutes after he left his home for routine morning jog with his friend Kishen. She had told him that two strangers posing as newspaper vendors asked about delivering newspapers but he told her to send them back as he had not approached anybody.
After returning from him his jog, Gupta found his house locked. His repeated knocks went in vain. He also tried to call his wife in her mobile.
Since he had left his spare key in his office in Electronics city, he went there to get his spare key. This took extra one hour and when he reached home and opened the door, he was shocked to see his wife lying dead in a pool of bed.
Gupta's report gave lots of questions to the police.
1. Why didn't he go back and check his wife when she called about those two newspaper vendors?
2. Why did he go for jogging in his formal shoes?
3. How did the culprits enter and escape the house, as it was closed from inside and there were no marks of force entry or struggling signs.
4. Why should he carry his company id card with him while going for jogging?
5. Why didn't he opt to get help from neighbors or just break a window to see that his wife is safe?
Gupta had answers for most of their questions.
He said he didn't take his wife's call about newspaper vendor seriously because she sounded very casual.
He went to jog with his formal shoes because he had a bad strain in his legs.
He thought that his wife might have taken a nap and that's why she didn't open the door. He didn't have any clue that something bad has happened to her.
That did sound very convincing but police were not 100% convinced that he has nothing to do with this murder. The triggered full fletched investigation and got their first stroke of luck while talking to his friend Kishen.
Kishen mentioned that he did hear Sathish talking to his wife while jogging but he also mentioned that he didn't hear his friend's mobile ring.
This gave the police the direction they were looking for.
The took Sathish and Priyanka's mobiles and found that Kishen had called Sathish early that morning.
While inquired about that, Kishen accepted calling Sathish in the morning as he thought he should skip their morning jog that day. But Sathish convinced him to follow the regular routine.
Police became very curious about Sathish's activities.
The contacted the mobile service provider to check the tower that provided signal for the call that Priyanka made to her husband.
The finding helped to reveal the truth!
As per the report, Priyanka's phone and Sathish's phone were served by the same mobile tower. Also the time of the call was a bit earlier than what Sathis had told them.
Also there were no calls from Priyanka's mobile or call record in Sathish's mobile while he was jogging.
So now police were clear who the killer was.
Based on their findings police took Sathish under custody and tried to bring out the truth from him.
After repeated questioning and persuasion, Sathish accepted of murdering his wife.
Satish told the police that Priyanka used to ill-treat his parents.
Priyanka used to allegedly create a scene whenever his parents visited their house, and also humiliate them. She used to fight with Satish over giving them money.
Also his sister Shobha Gupta had injured her spinal cord after she accidentally slipped and fell inside a water sump at their old house in 2006. Priyanka allegedly neglected Shobha and forced Gupta to move to a new house.
Unable to bear her "pressure", he moved to the new house. However, before moving to their new house, Shobha died.
They had been living separately for the last eight months before the gruesome incident took place.
Whenever Sathish tried to oppose her 'pressure', she had allegedly threatened to lodge a dowry harassment case against him.
Fed up of all this, Satish decided to eliminate her and chalked out a murder plan.
He strangulated Priyanka and slit her throat after tying her body to a chair. He then ransacked the house and took away some cash, to make it look like a murder for gain.
He insisted that his friend come jogging with him to create an alibi. While they were jogging, he pretended that he was getting a call from Priyanka.
But using technology Police were able to prove him wrong!
Police also mentioned that what Sathish mentioned may not be 100% true. It's also rumored that Satish's parents were not happy with the love-cum-arranged marriage of their son. Also Satish appeared to have felt inferior to his wife, since Priyanka was a post-graduate, while he had just completed his graduation.
They both loved each other, but whenever she argued with his parents, Satish never took her side.
This led to some differences between the two, but things got better when the couple shifted to a new house.
But soon, differences cropped in, when she started teaching. Priyanka was popular, and was admired by teachers and students alike. This, coupled with insistent arguments with his other sentiments might have forced Satish to commit the terrible crime.
We will never know exactly what happened until unless we hear it from Sathish himself. There's no problem that can't be resolved.
Good morale along with little bit of patience can surely help to avoid incidents like this!
