Kodaikanal vs Unilever!

Social media is a very powerful weapon. The latest problem publicized via social media is the alleged mercury contamination by the MNC Hindustan Unilever thermometer factory.

This is not happening elsewhere but in our beloved Kodaikanal, the princess of hill stations!

Chennai based rapper Sofia Ashraf has released a rap song ‘Kodaikanal Won’t’ which has gone viral since Friday.

It’s a shame that many of us were not even aware of the workers struggle in our very own state that has been going on for years now.

The factory is now shut and the workers are demanding rehabilitation and compensation and a thorough, cleanup of the factory site to remove the mercury contamination.

The company had consistently maintained that it had not dumped glass waste contaminated with mercury behind the factory site.

But a recent study by Chennai-based Community Environment Monitoring found high levels of toxic mercury in vegetation and sediment collected in the vicinity of the closed factory.

The rap song that has brought the issue to spotlight is addressed to the Unilever CEO Paul Polman.

Let us hope that the truth comes out soon!

Here's the Sofia's rap song for you!
