Indumathi started her writing career at the age of sixteen and is well known for her novel "Tharaiyil irangum vimanangal", one of the most popular Tamil novels. The characters Rukmani and Viswam from the story are very popular amongst book lovers. The story was first published as a series in Anantha Vikatan in the mid 70's. The novel is also translated and published in English as "Surrendered Dreams".
Indumathi has written many other series stories in popular Tamil magazines like Anantha Vikatan, Kumudham and Kalki. Thoduvana Manithargal which was first published as a story series in Kalki weekly is yet another noted work by the author.
She has written many social novels centering around the plight of women like Pisa nagarathu koburangal and also many thrillers and stories that revolve around black magic.
Another notable novel by Indumathi is "En veettu roja un veetu jannalil". The author popular for different genres again surprises readers by handling a friendship cum triangular love oriented story in a spectacular way.

In the late 70's Indumathi and Sivasankari together wrote a Tamil serial story named "Irandu per" in the Tamil magazine Kumudam. The story revolves around the extra-marital affair of a house wife and created a big storm across the state for its controversial theme.
Indumathi's stories have also been made into tele-serials. "Ganga Yamuna Saraswathi", "Sundaravanam" and "Nee Nan Aval" are some of the serials based on her stories.
Indumathi was also the producer of the Tamil movie "Karuppu Roja".
