Subha was startled!
She knew that breaking into some one’s room without permission is wrong. She turned back with guiltiness written all across her face.
There were three people. An elderly couple about the age of her parents and a young woman in a wheel chair.
“Sorry…” she stammered.
“Did he scare you???” asked the elderly woman and then turned towards the elderly man and said,
“Murthy, you shouldn’t have used that tone…”
Murthy looked like a Xerox copy of Baskar except for the signs of aging. It didn’t take much longer for Subha to understand they are Baskar’s parents and the girl might be his sister…
But didn’t Sarathy say he is living alone here?
Meanwhile,
“Really??? Did I sound rude, little girl? I am sorry about that…” said Murthy with a gentle smile…
“No, no no sir… You weren’t rude... peeping into others room is not correct… I… I…” stumbled Subha looking at the photo in the desk.
“Oh I got it! You work for Baskar is it?”
‘Yes… yes sir…”
“Then I can understand why you entered the room…” said Murthy with a soft giggle.
“What, what did you understand?” asked the elderly woman.
“Didn’t you see the photo in her hand Shoba? It’s our family photo… The one in which Baski is smiling… Now don’t you understand why she was so very curious to see the photo? She would have been surprised to see the arrogant manager she knew smiling as a sweet person in the photo…”
“Oh, I see…” said Shoba…
But Subha could see the difference in her face… It had turned very dull….

“Mommy, how long are you going to keep me here??? I hate being a dependent like this…” said the young woman in the wheel chair.
Her voice was filled with irritation and sadness.
“I am sorry, I shouldn’t have been here… I will go and wait in the corridor…” said Subha.
“That’s ok…. By the way, what’s your name?” asked Murthy.
“My name is Subha, sir…” mumbled Subha.
“Dad, stop talking to strangers like this…. We don’t even know if she really works for my brother. First ask him and get it clarified…” said the girl in a rude manner.
So it runs in the family??? Thought Subha within herself…
“Bavi, you know this is not the way to behave…” condemned her mother.
The girl didn’t say anything.
“Subha don’t take her words personally…” said Shoba.
“No, no ma’am… She is correct… You don’t know me… And I shouldn’t be here in the first place…”
“Oh I am getting fed up with this sugary talk… Mom, can you please take me to my room now???”
Shoba gave a nervous smile at Subha and started moving the wheel chair.
Subha and Sathesh stood there watching them for a while. Then Murthy turned his attention towards Subha.
“So Subha, you work for Boss consulting?”
“Yes sir…”
“I assume you are the new part time girl…”
Subha looked at him with surprise.
“I can understand your surprise. I am a joint director in the company. I may not visit office regularly but I do keep track of things…”
“Oh… That’s good to know, sir…”
“So, you are working for Boss consulting for free???”
“Yes… sort of… sir…”
“What does that mean? Yes or no???”
“Actually I owe some money to Baskar sir and…”
“Oh, oh, oh!!! I see…. so my son demanded you to work for him to repay that money???”
The sarcastic tone in Murthy’s voice confused her…
“I am ashamed of my son… And I apologize to you for his behavior…”
“Sir…!”
“Yes Subha, he is becoming uncontrollable… He used to be such a sweet person… I still can’t believe that he has changed like this.”
“Dad!!!!”
Baskar’s screaming voice disturbed their conversation.
