Summary:

This novel is set in 1890 Atlanta and follows seventeen-year-old Jo Kuan, a Chinese American girl. Jo works as a maid to a cruel rich woman.

Jo and her guardian Gin live in the basement of a house that belongs to a newspaper publishing family.

Jo starts writing in the newspaper using an anonymous name, Miss Sweetie. Her provocative and radical articles become very popular.

At the same time, racism is on the rise, and Miss Sweetie is safe if she remains anonymous.

But can she always remain anonymous? And what will happen when her past is revealed?

Review:

As the story flows, we can’t help but admire Jo, the main character. Also, her alter personality Miss Sweetie is very cool. The author seems to have put a lot of efforts to recreate the 1920s to provide a glimpse to us of it through a young girl of color.

On the flip side, the story plot takes a bit of time to come together.

Overall an enjoyable read.
