The movie focuses on society's obsession with attaching gender and age specific stereotypes to women.
It showcases the life of a typical Indian woman in her mid 30's - from the dread of the fast approaching formidable age of forty, her inability to rise up to her daughter's expectations and the discomfiture of her husband being mistaken for her younger brother.

The story:
Nirupama is a happy-go-lucky government employee in her mid 30's. Her husband Rajeev aspires to go abroad for a better living. Rajeev can't afford to take his wife along with him with out a job for her. But unfortunately Nirupama flops in all of her job interviews.
Both Rajeev and their daughter Lakshmi are fed up with Nirupama.
Out of blue, Nirupama gets an invite from President of India for a conversation. Out of anxiety, Nirupama flops in her meeting with the president and becomes the butt of many viral facebook jokes. To add insult to injury, Rajeev and Lakshmi flies away to Ireland leaving her behind.
Nirupama is dejected! But her old friend Susan meets her and reminds her of her old college days, the Nirupama with big dreams and aspirations!
This inspires Nirupama to re-discover herself!
But is it easy for a 36 years old woman to pursue her dream? It may not be easy but Nirupama shows that it is possible!
She fights for a chemical / pesticide free green vegetables and is soon noted and appreciated by Kerala Government. The news soon reaches the President, who again invites her for a conversation! This time, the re-loaded Nirupama is confident and excited!
Thus she proves that 'How old are you' doesn't matter when you have aspiring dreams!
Note:
Don't worry if you can't understand Malayalam, as per latest news, Surya has bought the remake rights for this movie. So, looks like Jothika is all set to make a comeback with the re-make of how old are you.
