2022 Gardening Diaries - 02. Garden Weeding - Bindu Vinod

15th April 2022

This is one thing I hate doing. Removing garden weeds manually is not all fun. There are many solutions available for garden weed removal. But the one rule of thumb that we follow in our home is that no chemicals are used anywhere in the yard—no fertilizers, no garden weed removal solutions, nothing.

It makes things difficult, but I have accepted this to be the best option.

When I talk about removing garden weeds, I am talking only about the flower beds that we use for gardening purposes, not the grass in our yard. That’s another major issue!

So, the one option I do for removing garden weeds from the beds is applying mulch everywhere. We already have the weed barrier cloth in our beds, so we need to add more mulch only.

Since this is the beginning of spring, even the garden weed plants are just sprouting, so removing most of them is not a big deal.

I use the weed removing tool to dig and remove them with the roots. But when we come back to the same place after a few weeks, you will be amazed by the number of weeds everywhere.

In a way, I like the perseverance of these garden weeds. You remove them, pluck them, pour hot water on them, put mulch over them. And we do not pamper them with water, light, space, etc. But they still grow. They themselves find some way to grow.

In a way, it is amazing.

But anyways, today I removed lots of them from our pavement and the flower beds.

And, just when I was wrapping up, I came across these beautiful sprouts. These are lily plants!

We had one lily here last year, and this year we have multiple lily bulbs growing in that same place. Isn’t that wonderful?

I was so excited when I first saw it. It was really amazing. I also checked the other location where I had a couple of Asiatic lilies last year. And guess what? I am not at all disappointed.

I have baby sprouts there too!

It's not a big deal, but it made me feel good and I love it!

I am hoping they all will grow and blossom this season. Fingers crossed. I will keep you all posted about these babies as we proceed with our gardening journey.
