அவள் குரலைக் கேட்டு, அவள் தந்தை கஸ்தூரிதான் வெளியில் வந்தார். “என்னம்மா...எதுக்கு இந்த நேரத்துல அவரை கூப்பிடுறே?” கேட்டார்.
“கதவு திறந்திருந்தது...அதான் கூப்பிட்டேன்!..”
“அப்படியா?..ஒருவேளை கதவு திறந்திருப்பது தெரியாமல் தூங்கறாரோ?” கேட்டவாறே வீட்டிற்குள் சென்று பார்த்த கஸ்தூரி அய்யா முகத்தில் குழப்பத்தை அப்பிக் கொண்டு வெளியே வந்தார். “அவர் உள்ளே இல்லையேம்மா”
“பாத்ரூம்ல கீது இருப்பார்” என்றாள் வத்சலா.
“க்கும்...பாத்ரூம் கதவு வெளியே அல்ல பூட்டியிருக்கு” என்றார்.
“ம்ம்ம்...வாக்கிங் போயிருப்பாரோ?” என்றவள், பின்னர் அவளே, “இல்லையே?.அவருக்கு வாக்கிங் போகிற பழக்கமெல்லாம் இல்லையே?” என்றாள்.
மெல்ல நடந்து, கேட்டிற்கு வெளியே சென்று தெருவின் இரண்டு புறமும் பார்த்தார்.
“சரி....டீ சாப்பிடவோ...இல்லை பால் வாங்கவோ போயிருப்பார்!...அவர் வரும் வரை இங்கே வாசலிலேயே உட்கார்ந்திருக்கேன்...திறந்து கிடக்கும் அவர் விட்டுக்கு காவலாய்” என்று சொல்லியபடி வாசலில் அமர்ந்தார் கஸ்தூரி அய்யா.
கால் மணி நேரம்,
அரை மணி நேரம்,
ஒரு மணி நேரம் ஆகியும் ரவீந்தர் வராது போக, “என்னது இன்னமும் காணோம்?” குழப்பத்துடனேயே மறுபடியும் தெருவிற்குச் சென்றார்.
“அய்யா...அய்யா...ஒரு விபரீதம் ஆயிடுச்சுங்க அய்யா” கத்திக் கொண்டே ஓடி வந்தான் மளிகை கடை சீனு.
